Mechanics Explained
Twisted Squirm's mechanic is ceiling ambush.
The grab. He hangs on ceilings. Getting too close triggers him to reach down and grab the player. The escape is rapid clicking side to side — the same rhythm as Treadmill Machine Skill Checks. If you fail the clicks, he damages you. After a grab, he relocates.
Relocation. He moves to a different area after grabbing someone — or if left alone for long enough (he makes a sound when relocating). This means triggering him clears the current spot — useful when he blocks a Machine or Item, but he can reappear elsewhere.
Doorway danger. Doorways obscure your view of the ceiling — walking through one can get you grabbed without warning. Check ceilings before entering doorways on his floor.
Blackouts. His eyes glow in the dark, which helps you spot him — but large maps with tall ceilings (like Sprout's outdoor section or Shelly's fossil area) make finding him harder. Highlighting Toons (Brightney, Vee) can mark him, but remember to look UP.
Ability counters. Several abilities work when grabbed — including dash/invincibility abilities that save you or others. Breaking line of sight or range stops the grab, similar to ranged Twisteds.
How to Counter
- Look up. If you know he's on the floor, glance at ceilings regularly — especially before entering doorways, working on Machines, or grabbing Items.
- Master the clicks. His grab is freed by rapid side-to-side clicking, like a Treadmill Skill Check. Practice the rhythm and he becomes trivial. On consoles, practice the joystick motion.
- If you see him, maneuver around — turn back or find a path that breaks his line of sight. Higher Movement Speed makes dodging him easier.
- If he blocks a Machine or Item: either bite the bullet (if you're confident with clicks) or have a more skilled/stealthy teammate ward him off — triggering him makes him relocate.
- Alert teammates. If someone triggers him, he relocates (with a sound cue) — knowing where he moved matters.
- While distracting, check ceilings periodically — being grabbed mid-distract is deadly because other Twisteds keep chasing you.
- Use ability counters: dash/invincibility abilities (Flutter, Rudie, and similar) work when grabbed — they can save you or a teammate. A Smoke Bomb discourages him if he's already pounced.
- In Blackouts, look for his glowing eyes and use highlighting Toons — then look up where he resides.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you counter Twisted Squirm?
Look up at ceilings regularly, especially before doorways and Machines. If grabbed, free yourself with rapid side-to-side clicking (like a Treadmill Skill Check). Maneuver around him when spotted — breaking line of sight stops the grab. Alert teammates when he relocates.
How do you escape Twisted Squirm's grab?
Rapidly click side to side — the same rhythm as Treadmill Machine Skill Checks. On consoles, rapidly move the joystick. If you can't free yourself fast enough, he damages you. Dash/invincibility abilities also work while grabbed to save you or a teammate.
Where does Twisted Squirm hide?
On ceilings — often over doorways, Machines, or high-rarity Items. Doorways are the most dangerous because they obscure your view. In Blackouts his eyes glow (helping you spot him), but tall-ceiling maps make finding him harder.
Is Twisted Squirm dangerous?
Medium. With fast clicks and watchful eyes, he's not difficult — his attack is easily defended. He's dangerous when he blocks something you need (Machine, Item, pathway) or grabs you mid-distract, leaving you vulnerable to other chasing Twisteds.

How Research Works
Research is the unlock mechanic tied to Twisted encounters: each successful run against a Twisted fills a Research bar. At 100%, the corresponding Toon becomes unlockable (some at 50%). It's the core loop for unlocking Main Characters and higher-rarity Toons.
