Mechanics Explained
Twisted Coal is two different enemies depending on the lights.
Normal floors: slow and sticky. At 16 chase speed, most Toons can outrun her. Her real annoyance is the long 5-second attention span — she keeps turning toward you while you try to lose her around an island. She's easy to shake if you use a table: circle it while staying out of her sight, and she loses interest.
Blackouts: terrifying. Her speed jumps to 25 chase — equal to Twisted Bobette's — and her detection range and hearing radius expand. Toons with 2 or lower Movement Speed simply cannot outrun her. Her attention span drops to 3 seconds, which sounds helpful, but her expanded vision means you'll be in her sight more often anyway. On top of that, she's smaller, darker, and nearly silent — no audio cues to warn you.
How to Counter
- Normal floors: use tables. Walk around a table while keeping it between you and her sight — you'll lose her easily despite the long attention span.
- Blackouts: don't get seen at all. Treat her exactly like Twisted Bobette: sightline discipline over speed. If she spots you, loop an island with sharp turns — but her high attention means you'll circle longer and burn stamina, so only do it if you have the reserve.
- 2 Star Movement Speed or lower? Stay hidden. You cannot outrun her in a Blackout. Stay near islands, avoid open areas, and don't take risky extraction spots.
- Use detection abilities. Abilities that reveal Twisteds (like Brightney's glow or Vee's detection) help you spot Coal before she spots you — essential in Blackouts, where she gives no audio warning.
- Carry speed/stamina Items. Pops, stamina Items, and speed consumables are your Blackout insurance — they can be the difference between shaking her and getting caught.
- 4+ Movement Speed can loop her in Blackouts — but communicate your distractor path; her huge detection range can pull her onto another target mid-loop.
- Extract near islands, not open areas. Machines in open, visible spots are death traps when Coal is on a Blackout floor — you won't know it's her until it's too late.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you counter Twisted Coal?
On normal floors, outrun her (16 chase speed) and use tables to break her long attention span. In Blackouts, she hits 25 chase speed — don't get seen. Use islands with sharp turns if spotted, detection abilities to find her first, and speed/stamina Items as insurance.
Why is Twisted Coal so much faster in Blackouts?
That's her mechanic: during Blackouts her speed, detection range, and hitbox all increase while her attention span drops. She's designed as a Blackout specialist — the lights-off state is where she's dangerous.
How do you lose Twisted Coal's attention?
On normal floors, circle a table or island while staying out of her sight — her long attention span (5s) makes turning too fast counterproductive. In Blackouts, her attention is shorter (3s) but her vision is huge, so breaking line of sight cleanly is the goal.
What Toons should avoid Twisted Coal in Blackouts?
Toons with 2 or lower Movement Speed can't outrun her 25 chase speed — they should stay hidden, extract near islands, and rely on teammates to distract. 4+ Movement Speed Toons can loop her if they communicate their path.

How Research Works
Research is the unlock mechanic tied to Twisted encounters: each successful run against a Twisted fills a Research bar. At 100%, the corresponding Toon becomes unlockable (some at 50%). It's the core loop for unlocking Main Characters and higher-rarity Toons.
